Stand Point on Media Design

Media Design leads us down new paths and keeps us moving forward giving more and more versatility to the communication of our ideas.

For my project I looked at media design with a specific focus on animation and how it is always evolving and growing in complexity. Animation has a history which dates back before even film where a succession of pictures would be shown to make a story. From this it grew past just an amusement at a fair as technology progressed and into the complex industry it is today.

For inspiration I looked towards one of the most well known animators in history –Walt Disney, who said, “Animation can explain whatever the mind can conceive. This facility makes it the most versatile and explicit means of communication yet devised for quick mass appreciation.”

In my animation I plan to use a Disney-like cartoon character because of my inspiration from Disney. My clip will involve a small narrative which through different mediums will show the evolution of animation through time. I am planning on using silhouette, cut-out and clay stop motion to do this. Another relevant quote from Disney I found is “we keep moving forward, opening new doors and doing new thing s because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.”

Two stop motion videos that I found inspirational were Muto a wall painted animation and Cheila, Swift Wings. I found these stop motions particularly interesting due to their use of material, such as a simple painting, which by turning into a stop motion clip have effectively shown clever narratives with animation.

Overall my stance on media design and animation is that it has grown dramatically throughout history and will continue growing in the future, allowing us to communicate ideas, unlimited by everything except the imagination.

For our DSDN 101 group projects we were assigned a Interior Furnishings company called ‘Iron curtains’. As a group we had to decide who our target audience would be and then establish a poster that communicated to the viewer who our target audience was and what we were advertising. We decided that our target audience would be middle age men, to portray this in our poster we went with a industrial theme, involving aspects of industrial construction such as iron beams and cranes. For these two group projects we also had to come up with a slogan that again depict what type of company we were and communicate with our target audience well, so we came up with the slogan “STUFF BUILT TOUGH”.

In our second project we made a clip that had to advertise who the target audience were and what company we were. So for our clip we advertise a strong built man that through a weak man a new tough chair and converted the weak man to a strong, this portrayed our slogan “STUFF BUILT TOUGH”.

For our advertisement clip we only showed two men in the film to show who our target audience was, and we used the chair to enforce the fact that our company was an interior furnishings company.
